Here are 10 of the 14 adorable new characters designed for Toy Story 3 by Pixar. We have yet to see the remaining 4 characters, but it’s exciting to see all the textures and squishiness of the new characters already. My favorites so far is are Mr Picklepants the hedgehog plushie, and Stretch the octopus. Watch the trailer of Toy Story 3 here on one of my previous posts.
The multi-page document for Project Studio will be a magazine that Çubuk the fictional Chinese Restaurant will publish.
Ideas for the magazine name are:
uçuk, buçuk, çubukluk
Ideas for the department pages are:
Chinese astrology page which will feature monthly horoscope readings for each of the 12 signs, and fun facts about the legends behind the animals who symbolize the signs.
DIY page where there will be illustrated guides that show how to make things, like chinese lanterns or things like Japanese paper foldings (origami).
Travel page/ destinations which will have brief introductions for locations that are located in Asia. However, writing about countries will be too general, so smaller places like cities or towns will be featured, like Kuala Lumpur instead of Malaysia.
Music, book, game and movie reviews will introduce the asian popular culture, like j-pop, k-pop and t-pop, books written by Amy Tan, games produced by Square Enix, movies by Hayao Miyazaki (My Neigbor Totoro) or Kar Wai Wong (Chungking Express) etc.
Some words from the editor, which will talk about the new issue, the happenings of the month and what is going on within both Çubuk and the magazine.
Health department which will feature general knowledge about subjects like acupuncture and herbal medicines, where people tend to be most biased or misinformed.
Jokes where there will be jokes that the readers send in. Readers will be asked to send jokes and funny incidents that have happened to them. This is for breaking away from the well known jokes.
Puzzles that will be fun and challenging for children and adults. This part will feature puzzles like sudoku.
News from Çubuk which will be about the kitchen, new products, new themes, new branches etc.
Ideas for the feature pages are:
Interview with an Asian celebrity, like Yang Chengling (Rainie), singer from Taiwan, or basketball players like Yao Ming and Wang Zhizhi, from China.
Article about subjects like yoga, Chinese tea, feng shui…
A short story page, selected from a competition among the readers.
A special report on how to select what you cook.
Might be the cheesiest post I ever made. Here is the proper nice snazzy and promised PDF: Proposal for multipage document
I was really surprised when I found out that one of my favorite songs, プラネタリウム (Planetarium), from the 花より男子 (Hana Yori Dango) soundtrack by 大塚 愛 (Ai Otsuka) was accused of being plagiarized. More to add to my surprise was that it was accused of being ripped off from another of my favorites, 素敵だね (Suteki da ne) – the theme song from the Final Fantasy X game developed by Square Enix, sung by 中野 律紀 (Nakano Ritsuki – more commonly known as Rikki).
The two songs have very similar melodies and lyrics. The videos also share similarities. Although it is not clear if this was intentional, though I seriously doubt after watching both the music videos that it could be unintentional, it is commonly believed that Ai Otsuka used this song as a homage to Rikki.
Here is Ai Otsuka’s Planetarium video being compared with Rikki’s video
I found a video and photographs from an installation named “Disturb me Brussels”, which was a one-time event for plastic whitehotel brussels.
It really looks fun, and it is a bit similar to the installation we are planning for my course called Interaction Design, VA444. Me and my project group will be making an installation using different projectors on different walls, and we will be connecting the images and designing the visuals as well.
Here are the photos from the installation:
and here is the video:
I never really liked Eastpak backpacks because they have only a large compartment and a small one, and I have never liked monochrome bags anyway (that was before Eastpak started to make these really weird patterns), but I simply love this couch. Guess why.
Three Panel Soul is a webcomic illustrated by Ian McConville, and written by Matt Boyd. I think this webcomic is a really good one because they try conveying a certain feeling with only three panels. The original comic was called Mac Hall, but apparently the site was hacked, and they moved it to Three Panel Soul.
This one is one of the older ones, and by far one of my favorites:
The newest assignment for my project studio class, VA 302 is making a multipage magazine that the fictional chinese fast food restaurant çubuk will publish. So one of the upcoming posts will be the proposal for the content of that magazine. I am pretty sure that this would be more exciting than the menu and I get to use Adobe‘s beatiful program, InDesign. Yay! I am posting the description and some ideas that my instructor Elif Ayiter came up with during class, and you will see my own ideas in a few days’ time once I finish organizing them into a snazzy PDF and then a blog post.
Design of multi-page documents
At least 20 double-pages where you flip the pages instead of making a large spread (like Sedef’s catalog)
Design a system that is consistent although the content varies. Example: Women magazines, in-flight magazines.
The advertisements are designed by other people, the content is designed by the art director. There are differences between the two. There is no design system with the ads for multi-page because they are not part of the magazine content.
There are two basic types of content in magazines.
1. Features (konu): happens only once, on a particular issue.
They are freer than the other content, but you cannot break the system.
2. Departments (bölüm): Happens every issue. For example:
Index page (contents / içindekiler)
Reader’s letters (okuyucu mektupları)
The department pages have to be the same in each issue.
These two types of content are treated differently. In-flight magazines usually don’t have departments, because they don’t have consistent readers.
Feature pages are much cleaner and legible. This is to emphasize that they are pages that should be read carefully.
The department pages are much more colorful and confusing.
But these two are in the same system!
Components of the system:
1. Designing the column system – the grid.
Selection of typefaces
Columns (flush, left, right)
3. Images (crop, silhouette)
4. Shapes (boxes, arrows, lines)
5. Color system
Ideas of content for çubuk:
food, lifestyle, urban life, travel, decoration, architecture, feng shui?, some stuff related to food, interview with a famous chef, a celebrity who likes eating chinese food, book reviews, chinese astrology…
Not just about food.
For next week:
Write a proposal in English for the content of your magazine, use your research and photos and post it on your blog. Online and offline research should be done.
